Keeping our dog mentally stimulated and engaged is important for their overall well-being. That’s why I love trying out new puzzle toys and games with my dogs. The moment I saw the new Nina Ottosson Lickin’ Layers Dog Puzzle Game | Slow Feeder, I wanted to try it. We have been using the ‘new’ Nina Ottosson Outward Hound Lickin’ Layers ever since it’s release. And that has been A LOT of times (on a regular basis with different dogs – even my foster doggy gave it a try). In this blog post, I’ll be sharing an honest review of what I – and more importantly my dogs – think about the Lickin’ Layers interactive puzzle toy. I’ll share my thoughts on what I like best about it, easiness to clean and more. In the video you can also see my dogs using the Lickin’ Layers.
First things first:
What actually is the Lickin’ Layers?
The Nina Ottosson Outward Hound LICKIN’ LAYERS is a puzzle toy designed to keep dogs engaged and entertained. It’s made of durable, food-safe materials, and is easy to clean (more on this in the video). The toy features multiple layers, each with different compartments that can be filled with treats or food. The challenge is for your dog to use their tongue to lick and manipulate the layers to get to the goodies inside.
The Nina Ottosson | Outward Hound LICKIN’ LAYERS is a dog puzzle that can also be used as a slow feeder for dogs.
It’s consists of 3 layers with over 100 food compartments.
The Lickin’ Layers is a level 2 – intermediate difficulty level and is recommended for dogs that are new to dog puzzles or as a slow feeder – instead of a dog bowl.
My dogs are pretty experienced with dog puzzles but they love to have their meals out slow feeders like this one. While it might not be super challenging (it doesn’t always have to be!) it’s fun and entertaining and makes mealtimes last longer.
It’s now also available as a smaller version for puppies and small dogs. You can find the Lickin’ Layer’s Puppy on Amazon.
Lickin’ Layers Review
I was initially drawn to the Lickin’ Layers because it looked like a unique and engaging toy that would keep my dog entertained for a while. I was not disappointed! By now there are some dupes on the market though. My dogs were immediately intrigued by the different layers and textures, and it took them some time to clean off the food and slows their meal times down nicely (see their first tries in the video below!).
One of the things I appreciate about the Lickin’ Layers most is how easy it is to use, when filling and cleaning and how much all of my dogs love it! The Lickin’ Layers is an absolute favourite in our multi-dog household – the senior and the young ones love it.
Overall, I would highly recommend the Nina Ottosson Outward Hound Lickin’ Layers toy for any dog owner looking for a fun and easy puzzle toy to keep their pup engaged and as a slow feeder to keep their meal time fun and healthy. You basically get a two in one solution. As mentioned above, there are dupes on the market and available. I haven’t used any of them and would please caution you to check that there are no toxic materials being used as your dog will lick it and take food directly from it!

This is not a sponsored video and I paid for the dog puzzle myself. If you found my review helpful and would like to purchase the toy I’d be grateful if you’d use my affiliate links below as I will get a small commission (price won’t change for you at all!), which helps me keep doing what I do 🙂
