Section 1: What Are Lick Mats for Dogs?

In this section, we’ll dive into the wonderful world of lick mats and explore how they can provide delightful mental and emotional stimulation for our furry friends. Designed to engage dogs during mealtime or snack time, these versatile mats offer a unique way to turn ordinary moments into interactive experiences. Let’s discover the magic behind lick mats and how they can captivate your dog’s attention.

The Concept of Lick Mats

Their purpose is to engage dogs (and cats) mentally and emotionally. Lick mats are innovative feeding tools that serve more than just providing nourishment to our dogs. These mats are designed to engage their minds and emotions, turning an ordinary mealtime into a stimulating and rewarding experience.

Lick Mats for dogs are most often plates that have different textures and are made for dogs to lick food off. So you can easily spread your dogs daily food on them or peanut butter (no xylitol), yoghurt, whatever you dog likes and is safe for dogs. Lick mats allow our dog to engage in the innate behaviour of licking, which is stimulating to dogs. Lick mats are often used as part of Canine Enrichment. Licking can also help our dogs to soothe anxiety and calm themselves down. And it allows dogs to engage in passive calming activities and help prevent boredom. They are a great training aid to help with calmness, prevent destructive behaviours, can also help with oral health and a healthy intake of food as they slow dogs down too when eating. We will cover these in more detail below. By spreading your dog’s favourite treats or spreads (more on this below) onto the textured surface, you create a captivating challenge that taps into their natural instincts and promotes mental engagement.

The Design of Lick Mats

Lick mats are crafted from high-quality, food-grade silicone material that is safe for dogs to lick and enjoy. They feature a textured surface with various patterns, ridges, or grooves that create a delightful sensory experience for your furry companion. The mats come in different shapes and sizes, allowing you to choose the one that best suits your dog’s preferences and size.

Different Types of Lick Mats for Dogs

Lickimat Buddy, Playdate and Soother – The Classic Lickimats

The Lickimat brand is very well known for their three classical designs Lickimat Buddy, Lickimat Playdate and Lickimat Soother. The Lickimat brand has nearly 16 000 positive reviews on Amazon and it really is a great tool.

The Lickimat Soother is amazing for anxious dogs as the soother design stimulates dogs the most and is also featured in the Lickimat Wobble (see below) and Ufo (I dedicated a hole short video to the Lickimat Ufo: Lickimat Ufo | First Impressions | Lickimat with Suction Cups)

You can get the classical Lickimats also in an XL version (pictured) and in a mini version!

Lickimat SLOMO

The Lickimat SLOMO comes in different colours and is available in one size. The Lickimat SloMo is design to serve wet and dry food at the same time – without it getting mixed up. This one now also comes in a XL version – A’s favourite!!

It’s also a great design for flat-nosed dogs like French Bulldogs as it will slow them down while eating without facing the big obstacles traditional slow feeder dog bowls have, wbhich can be a real challenge for flat-nosed dogs.

Lickimat TUFF

The Lickimat Tuff series is more robust than the classical Lickimats and is therefore recommended for dogs who might like to chew (however, if you have a real power chewer, they will be able to destroy them too!). So, it’s best to prevent chewing. Here’s how. They also now come as a mini version!

We use the Lickimat Soother Tuff. The Tuff series does also offer tougher versions of the Lickimat classics Buddy and Playdate. These three are the classical Lickimat designs and we use all three ‘normal’ Lickimats on a regular basis in our household.

Lickimat WOBBLE

The Lickimat Wobble is designed like a bowl and has the Lickimat soother inside. It comes in three different colours and one size. The wobbling of the bow ‘adds an extra dimension to the challenge of licking the treat from the rubber dimpled surface, greatly enriching and prolonging the pleasurable feeding experience.’ If you have a smart dog, then they are very likely to put the Lickimat Wobble onto a bed that makes it easier for them to lick it out and reduce the wobbling.

We love the Lickimat Wobble and use it on a regular basis. It’s also great in summer when you freeze it. We also like the Wobble version from Trixie (pictured)! It has not the soother design but instead ridges, which is great for more liquid spreads like yoghurt.

SodaPup Lick Mats – Lick Mats from the SodaPup Brand

If you shop the SodaPup Lick Mats directly from Sodapup.com then you can save 10% with code BULLYCO

The Sodapup Dog Lick mats come in different cute designs like Zombie, Bones and the Hearts and more. Whilst your dog won’t care – you might. They do look cute but tbh functionality is more important. We use both brands.

Section 2: Benefits of Lick Mats for Dogs

In this section, we’ll explore the numerous benefits that lick mats bring to our canine companions. From providing mental stimulation to promoting dental hygiene, these versatile tools offer a range of advantages for our dogs’ well-being. Let’s delve into the positive impact lick mats can have on our furry friends.

7 Benefits of using Lick Mats for Dogs

Lick mats offer numerous benefits for dogs, including mental stimulation, anxiety reduction, and improved dental health. Here are some key benefits of using lick mats for dogs, starting with mental stimulation:

1. Mental Stimulation

  • Enrichment: Lick mats provide a mentally stimulating activity that keeps dogs engaged and entertained.
  • Problem-Solving: The textured surface makes it challenging for dogs to reach the food, promoting problem-solving skills.

The textured surface of the mat engages their senses and provides a puzzle-like challenge, keeping their minds active and engaged. This mental exercise helps prevent boredom and can be particularly beneficial for dogs who spend extended periods alone or have limited physical activity. Additionally, the repetitive licking action required to extract treats from the mat promotes a sense of focus and can help reduce stress and anxiety in dogs.

2. Anxiety and Stress Relief

  • Calming Effect: The repetitive action of licking releases endorphins, which can help calm and soothe dogs, reducing anxiety and stress.
  • Separation Anxiety: Using a lick mat can distract and comfort dogs when left alone, helping to alleviate separation anxiety.

The act of licking has a naturally soothing effect on dogs. When they engage with a lick mat, the repetitive licking action releases endorphins, which are feel-good hormones. This can help dogs relax, reduce anxiety, and provide a sense of comfort and contentment. Lick mats can be particularly beneficial for dogs who experience separation anxiety or have nervous tendencies, providing them with a healthy outlet for their energy and emotions.

3. Dental Health | Oral Hygiene

One often overlooked advantage of using lick mats is their positive impact on dental health. As dogs lick the textured surface, their tongues work to remove food particles and debris from their teeth. This action can help prevent the buildup of plaque and tartar, promoting better oral hygiene and reducing the risk of dental issues. Incorporating lick mats into your dog’s routine can complement their regular dental care and contribute to their overall dental well-being.

  • Saliva Production: Licking stimulates saliva production, which helps clean the tongue, teeth, and gums.
  • Plaque Reduction: The textured surface can aid in scraping off food particles and bacteria from the teeth, contributing to better oral hygiene.

4. Slower Eating

  • Pacing: Lick mats slow down the eating process, making it beneficial for dogs that tend to eat too quickly.
  • Digestion: Slower eating can improve digestion and reduce the risk of gastrointestinal issues like bloating.

5. Behavioural Benefits

  • Boredom Busting: Lick mats provide a productive way for dogs to channel their energy, helping to prevent boredom-related behaviours like chewing on furniture or excessive barking.
  • Training Aid: They can be used as a reward during training sessions, providing a positive reinforcement tool.

6. Encourages Positive Associations

  • Vet Visits and Grooming: Lick mats can be used during potentially stressful situations like vet visits or grooming sessions to create a positive association and keep dogs calm.

7. Variety in Diet

  • Food Exploration: Lick mats allow you to introduce a variety of soft foods, such as peanut butter (xylitol-free), yogurt, pureed fruits, or wet dog food, enhancing your dog’s dietary experience.
  • Healthy Treats: You can use lick mats to offer healthy, low-calorie treats, making it easier to manage your dog’s weight.

By understanding the benefits of lick mats, you can appreciate the value they bring to your dog’s life. From mental stimulation and stress reduction to improved dental health, these simple yet effective tools offer a range of advantages. In the next section, we’ll dive into engaging activities you can enjoy with your dog using lick mats, adding an extra layer of fun and enrichment to your bond.

Tips for Using Lick Mats

  • Supervision: Always supervise your dog when using a lick mat, especially if they are strong chewers.
  • Safe Foods: Ensure the foods you spread on the lick mat are safe for dogs. Avoid harmful ingredients like xylitol, chocolate, or excessive salt.
  • Easy Cleaning: Choose a lick mat that is easy to clean, either by handwashing or being dishwasher-safe.
  • Freezing: For a longer-lasting activity, you can spread the food and freeze the lick mat before giving it to your dog.

Using lick mats can significantly enhance your dog’s overall well-being by providing mental stimulation, reducing stress, improving dental health, and encouraging positive behaviours.

Section 3: What to put on a Lick Mat for Dogs?

The beauty of lick mats lies in their versatility. You can spread a variety of dog-friendly spreads, such as peanut butter, yogurt, or pureed fruits, onto the textured surface. As your dog licks and explores the mat, they will savour the delicious flavours while engaging their senses and working to extract every last bit. This interactive experience not only provides mental stimulation but also helps slow down fast eaters and promotes better digestion.

We use my dogs’ wet food (Forthglade) as a basis and then add additional yummy bits. Here are our go-to’s but we also mix it up:

  • Yoghurt or Cottage Cheese
  • Pumpkin Puree – mixed with water to create a tasty paste
  • Lickimat Sprinkles – our faves are the Chicken Liver ones
  • Sardines
  • Veggies
  • Home-made frozen Treatos
  • Goat Milk
  • ‘Classical’ Toppers and we just discovered these Yak Sprinkles

By introducing this interactive feeding tool, you’ll provide mental and emotional stimulation that goes beyond basic nourishment. In the next section, we’ll explore the benefits that lick mats bring to our canine companions. Get ready to discover the positive impact they can have on your dog’s well-being and enrichment.

Section 4: Engaging Activities with Lick Mats

In this section, we’ll explore the exciting ways you can engage your dog with lick mats. These interactive tools can be used in various activities to provide mental stimulation, relaxation, and even training opportunities. Let’s discover some creative ideas to make the most out of your dog’s lick mat experience.

Creative ways for using Lick Mats

One engaging activity with a lick mat is to freeze it with your dog’s favourite treats or spreads. Simply spread a dog-friendly filling on the textured surface of the mat and place it in the freezer. The frozen treat will not only last longer but also provide a refreshing and cooling sensation for your dog, especially on hot days. This activity can keep your dog occupied for an extended period, offering a delightful and rewarding experience.

And if you have several dogs and limited storage room in your freezer, I highly recommend the No Fuss Ready Rak® (pictured). It has been a game changer for me (4 dogs, 1 freezer that also needs to fit my ice cream).

Using Lick Mats during Grooming Sessions or Vet Visits to distract and calm dogs during potentially stressful situations

Grooming sessions or visits to the veterinarian can sometimes be stressful for dogs. Introducing a lick mat during these occasions can help redirect their focus and provide a soothing distraction. Spread a tasty treat or spread on the mat and let your dog enjoy it while they receive grooming or undergo examinations. The engaging activity can help alleviate their anxiety and create positive associations with these potentially stressful experiences.

If you’d like to keep your dog standing ‘upright’ with the head up, then I highly recommend one that has suction cups at the back. This way you can attach them to a wall. Our favourite is the Lickimat Ufo (pictured), as it is also mess free. It’s also great for car rides etc. You can find a video I filmed about it here. We use it also on a regular basis – without the vet or grooming sessions, just because Chalkie really likes it.

Engaging activities with lick mats offer a wonderful way to provide mental stimulation, relaxation, and training opportunities for your furry friend. From freezing tasty fillings to using them during grooming sessions or incorporating interactive play, there are endless possibilities to explore. In the next section, we’ll delve into the important factors to consider when choosing the right lick mat for your dog. So, let’s move on to Section 4: Choosing the Right Lick Mat and discover how to select the perfect one that suits your dog’s preferences and needs.

Section 5: Choosing the Right Lick Mat

There are plenty of lick mats for dogs available to buy. They come not only with different designs or sizes, but also shapes and forms. When it comes to selecting a lick mat for your furry friend, there are a few factors to consider.

Here’s what to keep in mind:

  1. Types and sizes: Lick mats come in various shapes, sizes, and designs. Consider your dog’s breed, size, and licking habits when choosing the right one. Some lick mats are designed with specific patterns or textures to provide different levels of challenge and engagement.
  2. Material safety: Ensure that the lick mat you choose is made from food-grade, non-toxic materials. Dogs will be licking the mat, so it’s crucial to prioritise their safety and well-being. Look for mats that are free from harmful chemicals or additives.
  3. Ease of cleaning: Lick mats can get messy with food residues, so opt for ones that are easy to clean. Dishwasher-safe or mats with smooth surfaces make the cleaning process more convenient. Regular cleaning helps maintain hygiene and prevents bacterial growth. The easiest way to clean the ‘classical’ Lick Mats is to soak them in water and then add some washing up liquid and brush over it with a cleaning brush in circular movement. This is the way I find the easiest!
  4. Durability: Dogs can be enthusiastic lickers, so choose a lick mat that can withstand their licking and gnawing. Durable materials like silicone or rubber can withstand the wear and tear of your dog’s licking sessions. If the mat shows signs of ‘over use’ or is damaged, replace it.

Section 6: Lick Mat Safety and Supervision

While lick mats are a fantastic tool for engaging dogs, it’s important to prioritize safety and supervise your dog during use.

Here are some safety tips to keep in mind:

  1. Supervision: Always supervise your dog while they are using a lick mat. This ensures their safety and allows you to intervene if needed.
  2. Monitor licking behavior: Pay attention to your dog’s licking behavior to ensure they are not becoming too aggressive or ingesting the mat itself. If you notice excessive chewing or tearing of the mat, it’s time to remove it and provide an alternative activity.
  3. Avoid leaving the mat unattended: When not in use, it’s best to remove the lick mat and store it safely. Leaving it accessible to your dog may lead to unintended chewing or ingestion.
  4. Check for wear and tear: Regularly inspect the lick mat for any signs of wear and tear. Replace it if you notice any damage that could pose a potential hazard to your dog.

By following these safety guidelines and providing appropriate supervision, you can enjoy the benefits of lick mats while ensuring your dog’s well-being.
