How to Play With a Dog Without Toys

Playing with your dog without toys can be just as enjoyable and engaging as playing with toys. Here are some creative ways to have fun with your furry friend using everyday items and activities:

Hide and Seek

Hide from your dog in different areas of the house and call them to come find you. Use treats or praise as a reward when they locate you.

Chase Games

Run around the yard or house with your dog, encouraging them to chase you. You can also take turns chasing each other, making sure to maintain a playful and safe environment.

Fetch with Household Items

Instead of using traditional toys, throw items like rolled-up socks, crumpled paper balls, or even an empty plastic bottle for your dog to retrieve. Just be sure to use items that won’t pose a choking hazard.

Tug-of-War with Towels or Clothing

Use an old towel or piece of clothing as a tug toy. Grab one end and encourage your dog to pull on the other end. Make sure to keep the game gentle to avoid accidental bites.

Training Games

Incorporate obedience training into playtime by practicing commands such as sit, stay, or lie down. Use treats or praise as rewards for completing commands correctly.

Obstacle Courses

Create a makeshift obstacle course using household items like chairs, cushions, and broomsticks. Guide your dog through the course using treats or toys as motivation.

Scent Games

Hide treats or favourite shoes (some dogs looove to carry around their humans shoes, Big A does too. We always get them when he’s happy or as a gift when we come home haha. Too cute) or toys around the house and encourage your dog to find them using their keen sense of smell. Start with easy hiding spots and gradually increase the difficulty as your dog gets better at the game.

Interactive Play with Your Hands

Use your hands to engage in gentle wrestling or play fighting with your dog. Be mindful of your dog’s body language and stop if they become too rough.

Water Play

If your dog enjoys water, set up a kiddie pool or sprinkler in the backyard for them to splash around in. You can also use a hose to create a fun water spray for them to chase.

Improvise with Nature

Take your dog for a walk in the park or a hike in the woods and let them explore and sniff their surroundings. Play games like “find the stick” or “chase the leaves” using natural elements.

Remember to always supervise playtime and ensure that activities are safe and appropriate for your dog’s size, age, and energy level. With a little creativity and enthusiasm, you can have plenty of fun bonding with your dog without the need for traditional toys.
