Enrichment and Woodland Walks: Nurturing Your Dog’s Natural Instincts

There’s something magical about taking your dog on a woodland walk. The sights, sounds, and smells of nature offer a rich sensory experience that can greatly benefit your furry companion. Woodland walks not only provide exercise but also serve as an excellent opportunity for enrichment, tapping into your dog’s natural instincts. In this blog post, we will explore the joys of woodland walks and how to enhance them with enrichment activities, ensuring your dog has a fulfilling and enjoyable time exploring the great outdoors.

Engage Their Sense of Smell:

  • Allow your dog to indulge in their natural sniffing instincts by giving them ample time to explore the scents of the woodland.
  • Encourage them to use their nose by hiding treats or toys along the trail, stimulating their sense of smell and providing a fun scavenger hunt. “Find it” Game is on of my dogs favourite things to do. We don’t do this on new walks where there are all exciting sniffs and smells, but on our every day walks.

Encourage Natural Exploration:

  • Embrace your dog’s curiosity by allowing them to investigate fallen leaves, tree trunks, and natural features. Let them take their time, try not to rush them along and if you don’t get to a certain ‘place’, then this is OK too. It can be enjoyable to just go where your dog’s nose takes you (be safe and don’t get lost). Also for me, it’s super relaxing to slow down and helps so much with my own personal mental health – so no ear plugs, no phone, just be and admire the beauty of nature and seeing my dogs relax, enjoy and decompress.
  • Encourage them to explore off the beaten path, always ensuring their safety and respecting any rules or regulations of the area.

Offer Sensory Experiences:

  • Encourage your dog to engage with the environment by introducing sensory activities, such as walking on different textures (moss, soft ground, fallen leaves) or crossing shallow streams if safe to do so. Rambo loooooooooooooves to follow little streams. It brings him so much joy and it’s one of the most beautiful things to see my senior dog enjoying (and rolling in the grass or sitting with him on a bench and watch the world go by).
  • Allow your dog to experience the natural sounds of the woodland, such as rustling leaves or bird calls, which can provide mental stimulation.

Practice Recall and Obedience Skills:

  • Woodland walks offer an excellent opportunity to reinforce recall and obedience training.
  • Use the woodland environment to practice commands like “come,” “two paws on” etc providing mental exercise and reinforcing their training.

Interactive with Nature:

  • Engage your dog’s problem-solving abilities by hiding treats in trees (for your dog to explore, start easy) or encouraging them to work for their food, keeping them mentally stimulated during the walk. Mine love to find treats in piles of leaves.
  • You can also bring a blanket and enjoy some views with your dog – one of Panda and my favourite things to do after a long walk we like to sit up the hill in the grass (we don’t carry a blanket as my clothes are OK to get dirty, but we do carry water and a little snack) and have a little cuddle before we head home.

Be Mindful of Wildlife and Other Dogs:

  • Respect the natural inhabitants of the woodland by keeping your dog under control and on a leash if required.
  • Be aware of potential wildlife encounters and keep your dog’s safety and the safety of the wildlife in mind at all times.

Leave No Trace:

  • Respect the woodland environment by adhering to the principles of Leave No Trace.
  • Dispose of waste properly, stay on designated trails, and avoid damaging vegetation or disturbing wildlife.

Woodland walks provide a perfect backdrop for enriching your dog’s life and tapping into their natural instincts. By engaging their sense of smell, encouraging exploration, and incorporating interactive toys and training exercises, you can create a truly fulfilling experience for your four-legged companion. Remember to always prioritise their safety, respect the environment, and cherish the special moments shared during these enriching woodland adventures.
