Dog Enrichment Toys, Puzzles & Slow Feeder – tried & tested for you! (with Links & Video)

Chalkie, deaf Wadi Dog looking at three prepped Toppls

Canine Enrichment has become a massive buzz word in recent times – and thankfully it did as it helps increase awareness! Canine Enrichment in a nutshell are things we do to enrich our dogs lives. Where we let our dogs be dogs, fulfil their needs and let them engage in innate behaviours.

In this post we are going to talk about a wide range of dog enrichment toys, slow feeders, treat dispenser toys plates and dog puzzles games to let your dog engage in the innate behaviour of scavenging and foraging, working for their food, build confidence, increase their problem solving skills and more (click here to read more about the benefits of Dog Enrichment). And no, it’s not cruel as we ideally build their skill levels up slowly before we increase the challenge and contra freeloading is the scientific proof that animals prefer to work for their food if they have the choice (that’s why Zoos for example use enrichment too and make the food hunt more natural than feeding out of a bowl).

Video: Dog Enrichment Toys & Feeders we have used & tested

I introduce a wide variety of toys and tools in this video (description and links below and the video has time stamps too for easy navigation). Please do keep in mind that your dog decides what they find rewarding and enriching as every dog has their own preferences. I have different dogs – of different ages, breeds and sizes and give some indication in the video which tools and toys I recommend for what type of dog.

Part 1: Dog Puzzles

What is a Dog Puzzle?

Dog Puzzles are designed to help your dog work for their food and provide canine enrichment. While technically all tools we introduce here can be classified as ‘dog puzzles’, the ones I introduce here differ from ‘normal’ treat dispenser toys (toys who have a hole where the food can fall out when the dog moves it around) in complexity. Traditional dog puzzles on the other side consist of different challenges or steps the dog has to solve in order to get to the reward (food) and has to use different skills. The dog puzzles come in different difficulty levels, which means the complexity can be increased or decreased and adjusted to your dog’s problem solving skills. Puzzle toys like these are great to keep your dog entertained, mentally enrich their lives, increase the ability to problem solve and grow your dog’s confidence.

NINA OTTOSSON Interactive DOG PUZZLE TOYS

The probably most popular and well-known dog puzzles are the ones from Nina Ottosson by Outward Hound. They are a big hit in our household too. Nina Ottosson has created different difficulty levels for her dog puzzle toys (see table below). They can give you a good starting piont and indication what level is most appropriate for your dog, however there are also ways to make the puzzles easier or more challenging. She also shares some great tips on her Instagram account on how to customise her puzzles (make them easier or more challenging).

Nina Ottosson Puzzle Toys: Difficulty Levels

Great for puppies and dogs who are very new to dog puzzles. Can be used as a Slow Feeder too.Nina Ottosson says this level “suits all kind of dogs, in all sizes and ages”.More advanced and challenging level for dogs who have nailed Level 2 Puzzle Games. These puzzles games often involve different skills and are the most challenging in the Nina Ottosson categories. Outward Hound now also have these two new categories: PLUSH PUZZLES and PUPPY TREAT PUZZLES

In the following, I will add also puzzles from other brands (as shown in the video) – while trying to classify them for you by difficulty level. If you’d like to learn more about the Nina Ottosson Dog Puzzles, check out this post: The Complete Guide to Nina Ottosson Dog Puzzles: Engaging Fun for Canine Minds

Level 1 Dog Puzzles – Easy

Treat Tumble

The Nina Ottosson | Outward Hound Dog Treat Tumble is a Level 1 Puzzle Toy and could have probably also been added to the category of treat dispenser dog toys as it’s pretty simple and the dog only has to use one skill of moving the ball around to get to the food (which can still make it a lot of fun!). It’s available in 2 sizes (small and large).

As I mention in the video – the toy is pretty loud on our wooden floors, so I’d recommend to use it on carpet or maybe outside if you have a secure garden. We’ve had this toy for ages (it’s actually been one of our family dogs’ toys) and it’s still good to go with some scratches.

If you’d like are more challenging one you might like the Outward Hound Nina Ottosson A-Maze Ball- which is a Level 2 Dog Toy and a bit more tricky.

Level 2 Dog Puzzles – Medium

Dog Tornado

Nina Ottosson | Outward Hound Dog Tornado is a Level 2 Interactive Treat Dispenser Toy and also great as a Slow Feeder or Beginners Toy! All of my dogs LOVE the Tornado and find it pretty easy to solve but still have a lot of fun with it – and the bones can make it pretty challenging if your dog hasn’t yet learned how to remove them! There is now also a Puppy Version of the Tornado Dog Puzzle.

Shop the Dog Tornado Puzzle on Amazon or on Chewy

Dog Brick

The Nina Ottosson | Outward Hound Dog Brick is another Level 2 Intermediate Puzzle Toy and it has three different types of compartments where treats can be hidden. In order to find the food the dog has to lift, slide and flip boxes open. You can make the game more challenging by adding the white bone obstacles or remove them to make it easier at the beginning. It’s a super popular dog puzzle game and would be my recommendation if you’d like to see if your dog enjoys puzzles games.

Lickin’ Layers

Another dog puzzle that we have got to love since publishing this video is the Outward Hound Nina Ottosson Lickin’ Layers Interactive Dog Puzzle Game and Slow Feeder – my dogs love it. You can find a full review and video of the Lickin’ Layers here and also see my dogs using it.

Shop the Lickin’ Layers on Amazon

FlipBoard (Trixie)

The Brand Trixie also has a whole range of dog activity and puzzle games and classifies their Dog Activity Flip Board Dog Puzzle as a level 2, so a medium puzzle game or possibly an advanced level 3 as it contains of different steps. The cones can be lifted up and treats will be revealed this way. The two sliding compartments can be moved to reveal the three underlying compartments and then two bones can be ‘flipped’ to lift a flap that covers treats. These flaps are really really small though, so bigger dogs will find it challenging to fit their noses in – and it’s a puzzle game targeted at small breeds.

Please note: The Trixie Dog Activity Flip Board Dog Puzzle has relatively small, removable pieces, so please be careful if you have big dogs or dogs who are prone to swallow smaller items.

Level 3 Dog Puzzles – Advanced

Challenge Slider & Dog Sudoku

The Nina Ottosson | Outward Hound Dog Challenge Slider is a Level 3 of the Nina Ottosson Puzzle Toys, which means it’s an advanced puzzle game and the dog has to use a combination of skills and ideally already acquired some puzzle skills. It’s definitely on of our most loved puzzles – especially Rambo loves it.

Shop the Dog Challenge Slider Puzzle on Amazon or on Chewy

If you’d prefer a wood version or one with less compartments, check out these “Doggy Sudoku” ones from My Intelligent Pets / Dogs.

Dog Twister

The Nina Ottosson | Outward Hound Dog Twister is another Level 3 (Advanced) puzzle game and pretty challenging when the blocks are locked and it can take dogs relatively long until they have figured out how to unlock them. Also, the dogs need to learn different steps, so they will need to understand, that they have to unlock first, before they can slide the other pieces.

Part 2: Treat Dispenser Dog Toys

What are Treat Dispenser Dog Toys?

Treat dispenser dog toys are a simpler form of a dog puzzle and a way to keep your dog busy. They provide the dog with a challenge and a reward – ‘hunting’ the food (rolling the toy around, throwing the toy or licking what’s stuffed inside the toy) and eating the food (reward). This way dogs can use their brain and actively work for their food which is enriching – mentally and can also keep them on their paws and add activity, depending on the toy and your dog’s problem solving style. They can be used with dry food, treats or even wet food and raw and be used as a slow feeder

West Paw Treat Dispenser Dog Toys

Toppl & Toppl Stopper

Chalkie, deaf Wadi Dog looking at three prepped Toppls

The West Paw | Zogoflex Toppl is a big must-have in our multi-dog household. It comes in three sizes: small, large and XL and is made for medium chewers. I am a big fan of the Toppl and think despite his higher price point it’s a great tool to have in your Enrichment Collection due to it’s versatility. If you have a power chewer though you might want to check out a more durable toy (like the Kong or Sodapup Power Chewer options below) or train your dog not to chew it (I use ours for 2 bully breed dogs and they don’t chew them at all, if you’d like help with this, check out this post – it’s the same principle of redirecting and starting over: A Beginner’s Guide to Lickimats – How to Use Them and Prevent Chewing).

When you stick 2 Toppls of different sizes together (small and large or large and XL | as shown in the video), you can create a puzzle toy. For more information about the West Paw Toppl Dog Toy, how to layer it, the different ways to use it, a real life comparison of the three available sizes and more, then check out this blog post here: Product Review: West Paw TOPPL Dog Toy. Worth the Hype?

Also introducing their very own, super cute Toppl Stoppers – the ultimate companion for Toppl enthusiasts worldwide. Crafted to fit all Toppl sizes, this innovative accessory simplifies meal and treat creations, ensuring a mess-free experience. Qwizl

The West Paw Qwizl comes in two different sizes, is made for aggressive chewers and now also comes in red! You can use it as an enrichment toy and also use it to play fetch with your dog. You can put expensive chews in there and make it more challenging – and basically extend the life of the chew as the dog has to get the chew out of the toy, which is easy to hold on to or you can even stuff it – this is how we mainly use it mainly. Westpaw now also offers their own ‘treat paste‘, as pictured above. You can get it here.

You can also find a full video dedicated to the Qwizl on my YouTube Channel West Paw QWIZL DOG TOY – how we use it

Rumbl

The West Paw Rumbl is a treat dispenser dog toy is made for moderate chewers and comes in two different sizes and different colours. It’s an easy to grasp dog toy and you can make it more challenging by combining the Rumbl with other West Paw toys like the West Paw Hurley (comes in XS, small and large) or Rumpus (comes in small and medium) make it a more challenging treat dispenser. You can also use the Rumbl as a catch toy – it’s pretty light and easy to throw or hide for a lovely hide and seek session.

Tux

The West Paw Tux Dog Toy is a treat dispensing dog chew toy for aggressive chewer from the West Paw brand. It comes in two different sizes and three different colours. You can fill the Tux with treats (West Paw now offers their own freeze-dried single ingredient ones) or Kibble or even wet food or fill it with bone broth and freeze the toy for longer fun and let your dog play with it. Once the food is gone you can use the Tux also for fetch, catch etc or simply refill. It is also a floatable dog toy – so even fun in the water.

SodaPup Cans

The Sodapup Can Toys – their alternatives to the traditional Kong Dog Toys. As you can see in the picture above, they match the Kong sizes. If you’d like to see the comparison in ‘real life’, check out this YouTube video that I filmed.

The Sodapup Can Dog Toys come in different sizes (small to XL) and colours, as well as a Puppy version (not shown, it’s the pink one) and a Power Chewer version (black ones) for dogs that are heavy chewers and like to destroy their toys.

KONG Dog Toys

The ‘traditional’ Kongs

The ‘classic’ red KONG Dog Toy is probably the best known enrichment toy ever, so I will keep it short.

The Kong dog toys come in different materials and sizes (from small to XXL – and I’d recommend to get one size bigger than is recommended).

They also come as a Puppy Version and a Senior Dog Version.

We use the KONG Classic in L & XLas well as Kong Extreme L & XL – the Classic KONG in the black version is made for power chewers and is more durable than the ‘normal’ classical Kong

The Kong Wobbler

The Kong Wobbler has the traditional red look but is way larger than the normal Kong and also has no hole in the bottom – but on the side. It’s very easy to fill and the dog has to push it around to get the food out. The Kong Wobbler has a weight in the bottom to ‘bounce back’ into place and comes in two different sizes. You can find a review video of the Kong Wobbler on my YouTube Channel.

Shop the Kong Wobbler at Amazon or Chewy

The Kong Quest Bone & Star Pod

The Kong Quest Bone and the Kong Star Pod that we use and which you can see in the video might not be available everywhere. However, the Kong Goodie Bone seems to be a popular alternative and comes in the classical red version as well as the Extreme version for Power Chewer. It also comes in three different sizes and Kong recommends to either get the red classical one 1 – 2 sizes bigger if you have a dog who loves to chew or to go for the Extreme version (the black one).

Shop the Kong Star Pod on Amazon

Shop the Kong Goodie Bone on Amazon or Chewy

The Kong Goodie Ribbon

The Kong Goodie Ribbon comes in three different sizes. We use the L – the largest one and it’s actually relatively small. The Goodie Ribbon can be used as a chewy toy and can also be stuffed. It has ‘Gripper holes’ which make the treats stick and increase the challenge.

The Kong Goodie Ribbon also comes in the Black version for Power Chewers. The Extreme Goodie Ribbon is made for dogs who like to chew and are powerful chewers – so it will last longer than the classical red one.

Other Brands

Pet-Fun Pineapple Dog Toy

Pet-Fun Pineapple Dog Toy. I feel like the Pineapple dog toy doesn’t get enough attention on social media – I actually got it as a gift from a friend of mine and never seen it on social media before. It’s loved by all of mine!

This dog toy comes in different sizes from small to XL and they even offer a lifetime replacement. It basically works like a Kong but has holes on the side which make it more intriguing for the dog to acutally smell the food inside the pineapple, It’s a relatively easy toy that can be chewed and also used for playing.

Trixie Snack Snake

The Snack Snake or Snake Interactive Treat Dispenser Dog Toy comes in different colours and is also offered by different brands. It also comes as a curled version‘. It’s a fun dog toy that can be filled with treats, Kibble or wet food or Liver paste etc. It’s great for dogs who are patient and especially small dogs. It’s not super durable, so you don’t want your dog to chew it as it will simply destroy the toy. Some of them have a squeak in the snake’s head, so careful if you have a dog who loves a squeaky toy and you are actually looking for a toy to get some calm and peace.

Busy Squirrel

The Busy Buddy Squirrel Dude Interactive Treat Dispensing Dog Toy – incredibly cute dog toy but don’t be fooled by it’s cute looks! The Squirrel Dude is a tough challenge!

This makes it ideal for super patient dogs and dogs who are already very experienced with interactive treat dispenser toys and don’t get frustrated easily but rather love a good challenge.

Btw how cute is its name ‘busy buddy squirrel dude’?!

Part 3: Lick Mats for Dogs

What are Lick Mats for Dogs & why use them?

Lickimats (Lickimat is a brand) or Lick Mats for dogs are plates that have different textures and are made for dogs to lick food off. So you can easily spread your dogs daily food on them or peanut butter, yoghurt, whatever you dog likes and is safe for dogs. Lick mats allow our dog to engage in the innate behaviour of licking, which is stimulating to dogs. Lick mats are often used part of canine enrichment and super popular. Licking can also help our dogs to soothe anxiety and calm themselves down, engage in passive calming activities and help prevent boredom. They are great training aids to help with calmness, prevent destructive behaviors and can also help with oral health and a healthy intake of food as they slow dogs down too when eating.

SodaPup Lick Mats

The Sodapup Lickmats I show in the video are the Sodapup Zombie, Sodapup Lickmat Bones and the Sodapup Lickmat Hearts. The Sodapup Heart Lickmat | Love E-mat is a smaller size than the traditional Lickimats. The other Sodapup Lick mats have the same size as the traditional Lickimats from the Lickimat brand.

Shop the Sodapup LickMats on Sodapup.com (BULLYCO for Discount) or Amazon or Chewy

You can also find some Lick Mats from Sodapup and Lickimat in our shop (we ship to UK only though).

Lickimat Lick Mats

The Lickimat brand is very well known for their three classical designs Lickimat Buddy, Lickimat Playdate and Lickimat Soother. The Lickimat brand has nearly 16 000 positive reviews on Amazon and it really is a great tool. The classical Lickimats also come in an XL version.

Shop the LickiMat Classics on Amazon or Chewy and in our shop – UK only though 🙂

The Lickimat Soother is amazing option for anxious dogs as the soother design stimulates dogs the most and is also featured in the Lickimat Wobble (see below) and Ufo (a new design we haven’t had yet when I filmed the original video but I filmed a dedicated video about the Lickimat Ufo: Lickimat Ufo | First Impressions | Lickimat with Suction Cups)

Lickimat SLOMO

The Lickimat SLOMO comes in different colours and is available in one size – and lately also in a smaller version. The Lickimat SloMo is design to serve wet and dry food at the same time – without it getting mexed up. It’s also a great design for flat-nosed dogs like French Bulldogs as it will slow them down while eating without facing the big obstacles traditional slow feeder dog bowls have, which can be a real challenge for flat-nosed dogs.

Shop the LickiMat SLOMO on Amazon or Chewy and in our shop – UK only though 🙂

The Lickimat SLOMO is now also available in XL!

Shop the LickiMat SLOMO XL on Amazon or Chewy

Lickimat Tuff

The Lickimat Tuff series is more robust than the classical Lickimats and is therefore recommended for dogs who might like to chew (however, if you have a real power chewer, they will be able to destroy them too!). We use the Lickimat Soother Tuff (pictured). The Tuff series does also offer tougher versions of the Lickimat classics: Lickimat Tuff Buddy and Tuff Playdate. These three are the classical Lickimat designs and we use all three ‘normal’ Lickimats on a regular basis in our household.

LickiMat Tuff now also comes in a cat version and in a mini version!

Shop the LickiMat Tuff on Amazon or in our shop – UK only though 🙂

Lickimat Wobble

The Lickimat Wobble is designed like a bowl and has the Lickimat soother inside. It comes in three different colors and one size. The wobbling of the bow ‘adds an extra dimension to the challenge of licking the treat from the rubber dimpled surface, greatly enriching and prolonging the pleasurable feeding experience.’ If you have a smart dog, then they are very likely to put the Lickimat Wobble onto a bed that makes it easier for them to lick it out and reduce the wobbling. We love the Lickimat Wobble and use it on a regular basis. It’s also great in summer when you freeze it.

Shop the LickiMat Wobble on Amazon or Chewy

You can of course also find all Lickimat products here https://lickimat.com/

If you wonder whether you should go for the Lickimat brand or the Sodapup Lickmats, then this blog post and video might be for you

Part 4: Slow Feeder Dog Bowls

What are Slow Feeder Dog Bowls & why use them?

Slow Feeder Dog Bowls are bowls that have added obstacles to make it more tricky for a dog to get to the food compared to a ‘normal’ dog bowl. They are great to slow down dogs who eat too fast and might vomit after eating and are also great for dogs to provide enrichment and a healthier ingestion of food. The mental stimulation element provides the dogs with a more pleasurable experience when eating, then simply gulping the food down.

Mandala Tray

The SodaPup Mandala eTray – not the classical Slow Feeder Bowl but probably the most beautiful slow feeder for dogs on the market right now. You can fill them with wet food and dry food and separate it nicely and create beautiful designs. They are great for small and medium dogs or to serve a snack for large dogs. They are also dishwasher safe and come in different colours and one size.

Shop the Mandala Trays on Amazon or Chewy or Sodapup (BULLYCO for Discount)

Fun Feeder

Outward Hound Fun Feeder (Flower Large/Regular) Purple – this one also comes in a smaller size (medium/mini). If you have an XL Bully or similar large dog with big snoot, then I highly recommend this one. It’s the best I found so far! We also have used this for a really long time – on a daily basis, have popped it in the dishwasher countless times and it is still in perfect condition. It also has a non-slip base which prevents the bowl from being pushed around the room too much (great when you have big dogs).

If you have small to medium sized dogs, then the Outward Hound Fun Feeder SloBowl, Slow Feeder Dog Bowl in Medium/Mini Grey might be a good solution for you too.

Shop the Fun Slow Feeder on Amazon or Chewy

SloDog Slow Feeder Plates

The SloDog Slow Feeder Plates from the Lickimat Brand are a big every day item in our multi-dog household and very loved – by the dogs and me as they are so easy to use, to eat from and to clean. They now also come in a smaller size!!

Shop the SloDog Slow Feeder on Amazon

The Northmate Large Green Interactive Slow Feeder was the first slow feeder we got and we actually bought it right at the dog shelter when we took our lovely boy home. Only one of my dogs eats from this sometimes and he is a super fast eating, long nosed dog. So for him it does work but for my others it’s not too ideal as the obstacles are really high. If you have an anxous rescue dog or a dog who is not used to slow feeders or nervous when eating, then please be careful using it. It has realy good reviews on Amazon though, so why not make yourself an in-depth picture and see if it might be the right one for your dog.

Shop the Green Slow Feeder on Amazon

Part 5: Snuffle Mats for Dogs

What are Snuffle Mats & why use them?

Snuffle Mats are a great way to let your dog scavenge for food and let them use their nose. The layers of a snuffle mat where food can be hidden makes it a fun activity for your dog. You can achieve similar outcomes also when scatter feeding your dog outside or use a box that you fill with food, balls etc.

Snuffle Mats come in many different forms, shapes, sizes and styles – even as activity activity mats with different options. Flower Snuffle Mat 50x50cm | Snuffle Mat 17″ x 17″ – as an alternative to a Snuffle Mat you can also use a simple Bathroom mat from Ikea or wherever or simply scatter feed some Kibble in the grass in your garden or in a park. This is actually a massive hit in our household and it’s basically free! Whatever works for you and your dog to let them forage and sniff. Snuffle Mats are easy as they are mess free and can often put in the washing machines.

An alternative is the Snuffle Ball, which you can also easily make yourself at home! There are many great tutorials on YouTube on how to make these balls and it’s pretty easy and fast! And you can pick all your favourite colours and decide which size you’d like.

What’s next?

This video has been filmed a while back … it might be time for an updated one soon as we got many more (dogs) and enrichment things in the meanwhile. You can find more videos about Sodapup Dog Toys, Tug-E-Nuff Dog Toys, Slow Feeders etc on my YouTube Channel, which you can find here.

I’d also LOVE to hear which tools and toys you are using on a regular basis and are loving! Please do leave a comment below with your favourites, so I can check them out too. Thank you!
