Treat-Dispensing Puzzles
Kong Toys: Fill a Kong toy with tasty treats or dog-safe peanut butter and let your dog figure out how to extract the goodies. This game encourages persistence and problem-solving skills. Interactive Puzzle Feeders
Invest in puzzle feeders that require your dog to manipulate levers, sliders, or compartments to access their food. This engages their senses and encourages them to work for their meal.
DIY Snuffle Mats
Create a snuffle mat by hiding treats or kibble in the fabric strands. Your dog will use their nose and paws to search and find the hidden treasures. You can find a how to make your own snuffle mat guide here.
Hide and Seek Games for Dogs
Find the Treat
Start by having your dog sit and stay, then hide treats in various locations throughout the house or a designated area. Release them with a command like “find it!” and let them search for the treats. Gradually increase the difficulty of the hiding spots.
Toy Treasure Hunt
Hide your dog’s favourite toys around the house or in the backyard and encourage them to find each one. This game stimulates their sense of smell and sharpens their searching abilities.
Interactive Toys and Brain Games for Dogs
Interactive Dog Puzzles
Invest in interactive puzzle toys specifically designed for dogs. These toys usually require your dog to manipulate different components or solve puzzles to reveal hidden treats.
Shell Game
Place three cups upside down and hide a treat under one of them. Shuffle the cups and encourage your dog to find the treat by indicating the correct cup. This game enhances their focus and memory skills.
Training and Mental Exercises
(Basic) Obedience Training
Teach your dog new commands or practice existing ones through positive reinforcement training sessions. Training engages their brain, strengthens the bond between you and your dog, and encourages good behaviour.
Once you have build the fundamentals, move on to more advanced training with your dog. You could for example start with trick training, build on Obedience Training (maybe check out Competitive Obedience), Agility, Parkour, Doggy Dancing (Heelwork to Music) etc.
Training is not only mentally engaging, but it can also strengthen the bond you and your dog have.
I like to include some fun routines into our walks and Rambo loves them. We still do them (he’s turning 12 this year), just slower but he finds them super fun. The video below is a little part of it – leg weaves. I adopted Rambo when he was 6 years old and you definitely can teach an older dog new tricks too! Training is not just for puppies!!
Problem-Solving Toys
Introduce toys that challenge your dog’s problem-solving skills, such as treat-dispensing puzzles or toys that require them to manipulate pieces to access a reward.
Name That Toy
Teach your dog the names of their toys and play a game where you ask them to fetch a specific toy by name. This activity enhances their cognitive abilities and strengthens their vocabulary.
Brain games are an excellent way to keep your dog mentally sharp, stimulated, and entertained. By incorporating treat-dispensing puzzles, hide and seek games, interactive toys, and training exercises into your dog’s routine, you’ll be providing them with the mental stimulation they need to thrive. Remember to choose games appropriate for your dog’s age, breed, and skill level, and always supervise playtime.
