The following are some important things to know about feeding and food enrichment for dogs:
Importance of a Healthy Diet
A healthy diet is crucial for dogs to maintain good health and prevent health problems. It is important to feed dogs a balanced diet that meets their nutritional needs based on their age, breed, and activity level.
Feeding Schedule
It is recommended to feed adult dogs once or twice a day and puppies more frequently, usually 3-4 times a day. A consistent feeding schedule can help to prevent overeating and promote healthy eating habits.
Food Enrichment
Food enrichment and Feeding Enrichment involves providing dogs with a variety of food-based activities to stimulate their senses and provide mental stimulation. This can include using puzzle feeders or providing them with food-stuffed toys. You can differentiate it further by looking at what to feed – ie adding variety to your dogs’ meals (do it slowly!), which would be food enrichment. And adding variety to the way you feed, ie feeding enrichment as described above. If you only get started with this, here are some recommendations:
- Puzzle Feeders: Puzzle feeders are toys that require dogs to work for their food, such as by using their paws or nose to manipulate the toy and release the food. This can provide mental stimulation and promote healthy eating habits. Our favourite ones are the Nina Ottosson | Outward Hound puzzle feeders, and treat dispensers like the Roolo and the Kong Wobble. To get started something like the Nina Ottosson Lickin’ Layers is a great tool as it can also be used as a slow feeder, is engaging but not overly complicated (we want to avoid frustration when we get started).
- ‘Food-Stuffed Toys: Food-stuffed toys, such as Toppls, Pupsicles (code ENRICH10 for a discount), Freezbones (code ENRICH for a discount), Kongs, can be filled with treats or a portion of their meal to provide dogs with a more interactive and engaging eating experience.
- Lick Mats and Snuffle Mats: A snuffle mat is a tool I use regularly with Chalkie and Calm Dog Games (a small UK based business) has a Dog Snuffle Mat DIY Kit that I love. You can make a really big snuffle mat (as most bought ones are either too small or too easy or super expensive) and you can choose your own colours. We also have a discount code (BULLYCO) if you’d like a little discount off. We also love their Snuffle Plaids, the Snuffle Balls and their Dog Enrichment Cards Kit – makes a great gift too and basically easy go-to enrichment ideas you can try with your dog. The most popular Lickmats for Dogs are the ones from Lickimat and Sodapup – but there are many options available now. You an also use a slow feeder and simply use this as a lickmat. I also love the Freezbone Swirl!
- Treats: Treats can be used to reward good behaviour or provide a small snack throughout the day. It is important to limit the number of treats given to dogs and choose healthy options. Natural chews are also a big hit in our household. If you’d like to see what I feed, check out this video.
- Human Food: Some human foods can be given to dogs in moderation, such as fruits and vegetables, lean meats, and dairy products. However, it is important to avoid giving dogs foods that are toxic to them, such as chocolate, grapes, peanut butter that contains xylitol and onions. For ideas how to add more variety to your dogs meal, I like the ‘Forever Dog Recipe Book‘.
Customising Food Enrichment: It is important to customise food enrichment activities based on each dog’s individual needs, preferences, and abilities. For example, older dogs or dogs with dental issues may require softer food or different types of food enrichment activities.
Overall, feeding and food enrichment are important aspects of dog care that should be considered by all dog owners. Providing dogs with a balanced diet and food-based activities can help to promote healthy eating habits, prevent obesity, and provide mental stimulation.
